The Mississippi Innocence Project is committed to providing the highest quality legal representation to its clients: Mississippi state prisoners serving significant periods of incarceration who have cognizable claims of wrongful conviction. In addition, the Project seeks to identify systemic problems in Mississippi’s criminal justice system, develop initiatives designed to raise public and political awareness of the prevalence, causes and societal costs of wrongful convictions, and to promote meaningful criminal justice reform. Each semester a small group of second and third year law students participate as members of the Project by enrolling in the Innocence Clinic for course credit. The Clinic consists of a substantive classroom component coupled with live-client representation under the supervision of the Project’s director. Students take active responsibility for cases – assessing claims, meeting with clients, interviewing witnesses and writing, filing and arguing pleadings.
