For a number of years, the School of Law has achieved an almost unparalleled record in the placement of its graduates. UM has been consistently recognized among the top law schools, both public and private, in the placement of its graduates within nine months of graduation. We hope to continue this trend in the coming years.
Joyce Whittington, who has served as director of career services for almost 20 years, actively recruits law firms, judges, government agencies, corporations, individual practitioners and other prospective legal employers to either conduct on-campus interviews or to request résumés of our students when they have hiring needs. The office acts as a clearinghouse through which students are informed of recruiter visits, résumé collection and a variety of other career and clerkship opportunities and deadlines. The office works with all currently enrolled law students, as well as alumni who seek to make a position change. Permanent, summer and part-time employment information is made available to all students and alumni.
In addition, the office provides career counseling, résumé and interview workshops, and one-on-one individual conferences to address the needs of each student.
Even though 65 percent of our students elect to stay in state to work, the Career Services Office is continually seeking positions outside the state for those who wish to practice elsewhere. And while 65 percent of our most recent class chose private practice, opportunities abound in judicial clerkships, business and industry, and government. Because our graduates have historically performed well on the Mississippi bar exam, they are particularly attractive to employers in all sectors of the legal profession.
