Tops in placement among public law schools

The School of Law has achieved an almost unparalleled record in the placement of its graduates. The school consistently is recognized among the top schools, public and private, in the placement of its graduates within nine months of graduation. With a 97.7 percent placement record, only 13 public law schools in the country scored higher than The University of Mississippi.

“We are especially pleased with our ranking in placement,” said Dean Sam Davis. “We continually do well in finding jobs for our students. To be ranked among the best public schools is very gratifying for us.” Dean Davis credits the leadership of the placement office with this achievement. Director Joyce Whittington actively recruits law firms, judges, government agencies, corporations, individual practitioners, and other prospective legal employers to conduct on-campus interviews as part of her office’s recruitment efforts. The office acts as a clearinghouse through which students are informed of recruiter visits and other career and clerkship information and deadlines. Permanent, summer, and part-time employment information is made available to all students.

In addition, the office provides career counseling. Résumé and interview workshops, as well as individual conferences, are conducted throughout the year to address the special interests and needs of each student.

Although approximately 70 percent of our students choose to work within the state, a significant portion secure positions in a variety of fields and locations around the country. Most choose private practice, but opportunities abound in judicial clerkships, business and industry, and government. In recent years, the Law School’s bar passage rate has been in the range of 95 percent for first-time takers, making our graduates particularly attractive to employers in all sectors of the legal profession.
